ROSCOE H. TURNER - Biography
Roscoe Turner was born in Tulsa, Ok. On 2-16-32 and has been a life long resident. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in the Class of ‘49 and attended Tennessee State University at Nashville, Tennessee from 1949 to 1951.
Roscoe was active in sports throughout high school and college. He played football at BTW and at Tennessee State University. When his sons decided they wanted to participate in school athletics, he joined them by volunteering to coach football at Anderson Junior High (now Anderson Elementary) and took them on to win the City Championship. He continued to support them in their ongoing athletic endeavors at BTW, TU, OU and Langston.
Roscoe has lived in the Sequoyah Neighborhood area with his wife Nancy for the past 28 years and is a member and trustee of the Metropolitan Baptist Church. Roscoe’s family includes 7 children, 13 grandchildren, and 10
great-granchildren.
Roscoe retired from the City of Tulsa after 21 years as Boiler Inspector. Since then he has been an Activist at City Hall and a City Councilor for three terms continuing his allegiance to helping the citizens of Tulsa and giving back to a city that employed him for so many years.
Roscoe has an employment record to be proud of:
(1) Frisco Railroad from 1951 to 1955
(2) Newspaper Printing Corporation from 1955 to 1973
(3) Business Agent for Service Employees International Union #245 from 1972 to 1973
(4) City of Tulsa from 1973 to 1994 ( retired) as Boiler Inspector
(5) Chubb & Sons Insurance Co. from 1994 to 1998 as Boiler Inspector
(6) City Councilor for District 3 from 1998 to 2002
(7) Chubb & Sons Insurance Co. from 2002 to 2003 as Boiler Inspector
(8) City Councilor for District 3 from 2003 to present
Roscoe has several certifications:
(1) 1st Class Stationary Engineer
(2) National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessels Inspectors Commission
(3) Certificate of Competency from the State of Oklahoma Department of Labor
After retiring from the City of Tulsa, Roscoe was asked to participate in various groups and organizations and he continues to do so today as well as adding a couple more to the list:
(1) Chairman of Sequoyah Area Neighborhood Association Inc.
(2) Board of Directors Springdale Neighborhood Development Council
(3) Board of Directors North Tulsa Community Development Corporation
(4) Downtown Kiwanis Club of Tulsa
As an Activist and as a City Councilor Roscoe believes in several key
issues:
(1) Improve Tulsa’s infrastructure
(2) Increase economic growth for Tulsa, especially the 3rd City Council
District
(3) More aggressive Crime Control
(4) Include City Council Districts #1, #2, and #3 to be recognized as important as the other six districts within the City of Tulsa
(5) Unite Tulsa’s diverse population into one homogeneous city through love, tolerance and respect.
(6) Believes that government exists to serve the people, not to control them
As City Councilor of Council District #3 Roscoe is a true advocate for his district and believes in an open door policy. He has always been available to his constituents and goes the extra mile to represent their interests. |
